PRADA FOUNDATION : ART AND FASHION WERE GONE TOGETHER

THE GIACOMETTI VARIATIONS, MILANO 2010
: by American artist John Baldessari specially designed for the Prada Foundation in Milan

The Californian artist was inspired by the imagination of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti and created nine of huge figures of 15 feet tall ,which were clothed and outfitted with garments and objects designed by Baldessari himself, thus forming a hypothetical, though immobile, fashion show.
The exhibition captures an idea of integration and dialogue between art and fashion, where the osmosis between model and sculpted figure becomes a declaration of mutual attraction and communication. In this project, John Baldessari revisits some images that arise from the closer relationship between the film and fashion. The figures made of resin and steel, sprayed with bronze, were inspired by characters and settings as diverse as Degas ballerina "La petite danseuse of fourteen years", Marilyn Monroe and Hollywood glamour of the 50's, the nineteenth century’s crinoline of "Gone with the Wind" or the trench coat of Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca”.
